The Impact of Ending Sales of Gas-Powered Cars by 2035

On August 5th, President Biden announced an initiative to create a bill to discontinue the purchase of gas-powered vehicles by 2035. This would work toward the federal government’s goal of 65 percent reduced emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Biden’s plan is to make half of all new U.S. vehicles electric in 2030; this would include plug-in hybrid-electric models that have gasoline engines. The end of gas-powered car sales could lead to an estimated 7.5 million electric vehicles in the future.

Collectively, gas-powered vehicles have a negative impact on the environment and bring a great deal of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Gas-powered cars are a major source of carbon dioxide, bringing in air pollution. They are also linked to acid rain since the toxins accumulate in the clouds as a result of the pollution. This ultimately pollutes rivers, ponds, and other ecosystems.

“Cars and trucks account for nearly one-fifth of all US emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gasses for every gallon of gas,” according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Electric vehicles are a sustainable option for the environment because they produce minimal emissions and cause less pollution overall.

“An electric car eliminates all these forms of pollution. The fact is that an electric car simply does not emit the toxins that a regular car does,” Elmodrive stated.

Moving away from gas-powered cars and switching to electric vehicles can advance the fight against climate change. They contribute less to global warming than gas-powered cars — a new alternative that can greatly reduce emissions and help achieve the federal government’s environmental goals.
