Protests for Climate Change

When a problem occurs and people want change, protests are what many resort to. Protests happen when people want to express themselves regarding an issue, and they can range from violent to peaceful.

Climate change may not appear to be a huge threat now, but if something is not done soon, it may destroy our world in the future. As a result, this issue is something that many people fight for on a daily basis all around the globe. The protests for climate change never and will never stop. Here are some examples of what has been going on:

Examples of peaceful protests:

1. On February 4, 2021, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg expressed her opinion about the farmer’s protest on Twitter and gladly stood with them saying, “I still #StandWithFarmers and support their peaceful protest. No amount of hate, threats or violations of human rights will ever change that. #FarmersProtest.” This portrays that a major climate change activist is standing with this problem because farmers are embracing the consequences of climate change in their work.
2. On April 26 of this year, 101 Nobel Laureates sent out a written statement insisting world leaders must limit the usage and mining of fossil fuels.
3. On International Human Rights Day, which occurs on December 10 each year, many environmentalists raise awareness on social media by writing and posting what a problem the current situation is and how global climate change will hurt us if not fixed. They encourage others to support and help but also warn them in memory of environmental defenders and activists who are under threat because of the climate crisis.
4. On October 10, 2021, hundreds of people marched in Brussels to raise awareness on climate change prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP26, in Glasgow.
5. On September 21, 2021, four activists from Youth for Green Communities marched for 16 miles in Uganda to raise awareness on investing in clean energy, and they demanded that the government pass a certain climate bill.

Examples of violent protests:

1. On September 14, 2021, German activists entered Day 16 of a hunger strike in front of the chancellery in Berlin to draw attention to the impact of climate change. This may be violent because hunger causes individual pain and poor health in addition to societal chaos.
2. In April of 2022, 1,000 scientists from across 20 countries planned actions to spread the word about climate change. A variety of actions were taken such as blocking roads, picketing infrastructure, spreading paint, and physically putting up climate change information for people to read as they walk by.
3. In 2018, a group of British government officials planned the Extinction Rebellion where they planned a blockade against all the oil facilities across the U.K. This helped lessen climate change.
4. In April of 2022, Spanish scientists threw fake blood over the facade of the National Congress.
5. In 2015, after protests against global warming broke out on the sidelines of climate talks and turned violent, French police arrested over 200 people in the country’s capital of Paris.
