The rate at which climate change is happening is well-documented and unsurprising. Millions of acres of land are destroyed every year for commercial purposes, and natural disasters are increasing at a rapid rate. While it can be easy to feel hopeless and disheartened about the magnitude of climate change, there are a multitude of ways for citizens to get involved in the fight for environmental sustainability.

It can be difficult to create an environmental organization or group from scratch, which is why it is important to spread awareness about small actionable steps that people can take in their communities. Citizens can recycle products, such as paper, cardboard, and glass bottles, so that they can be made into other items instead of ending up in a landfill. Recycling products is a significantly more sustainable way to dispose of unwanted goods. For example, in recent years, milk jugs have been recycled to make objects, like outdoor furniture and toys.

Another way citizens can take a stand against climate change within their own communities is by conserving energy. By switching off lights in homes when not in use or purchasing energy-efficient appliances, this can help limit greenhouse gasses, slowing down global warming. For instance, people can replace their light bulbs with light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs), which use anywhere from 25 to 80 percent less electricity compared to traditional bulbs.

Moreover, citizens can get involved in their communities by volunteering. Citizens can volunteer by doing simple tasks, like picking up garbage left by others in public places or participating in group environment clean-ups. People can host their own clean-up events or use the map created by Earth Day to discover nearby initiatives. Taking the time to pick trash up can make a significant difference in the well-being of the environment and the organisms living in it.

Although the size of deeds may vary, all actions are important to achieving the ultimate goal of environmental sustainability and preservation. By uniting together behind a common cause, communities can contribute to the international effort toward fighting climate change.
